Floatation Therapy in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear

Curious about float therapy? At Floatation Wellness Centre in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, we have more than 4 years of experience with floating and are passionate about the endless health benefits associated with float tanks – we’ve experienced them first hand! Floatation therapy is a practice that people use to drift into a blissful, deep meditative state that rejuvenates your mind, body, and soul.

Your floatation experience is delivered through a super-saturated Epsom-salt solution, 25cm deep, containing 525kg of magnesium-rich Epsom-salts. Both the solution and the air within the tank is heated to skin temperature, (35.5°C) so once you begin to settle, it’s actually difficult to determine which parts of your body are in the water and which are not.

Being in the tank creates an environment similar to being in the Dead Sea. Without the feeling of temperature or movement, being in the tank gives you a total sense of freedom and leaves you completely weightless. Our state-of-the-art I-SOPOD is designed to block out all external distractions which include sight, sound, and sensations of gravity.

Floating has become increasingly popular over the years, especially in athletes and people with MS and fibromyalgia. Early research from Dr Rod Borrie, who has a PhD in Psychology and is an expert in floatation therapy, has highlighted the positive impacts of floating since the 70s, and leads a general population study called ‘The Fibromyalgia Floatation Project’ (FFP). The International Voluntary Project was created to study the efficiency of REST as a treatment for fibromyalgia and was organised by the Floatation Research Group.

Research showed that there was an overall reduction in pain intensity when floating. A study in 2012 provided evidence that floatation improves the lives of people with fibromyalgia by decreasing pain, muscle tension, anxiety, and stress. Floating also increased freedom to move, energy, mood, and quality of sleep. These improvements continued in patients with further floatation therapy sessions.
